1 Corinthians 7:15-16 But if the unbelieving depart, let him depart. A brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases: but God hath called us to peace. (16) For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou shalt save thy husband? or how knowest thou, O man, whether thou shalt save thy wife? (KJV)
Before packing your spiritual baggage and going on a guilt trip, stop and consider before boarding a potentially sinking ship. Make sure you know ahead of time what you are getting into before boarding a vessel that is getting ready to set sail on the dead sea with winds of doctrine predicted also. So you decided that you were the one and only that God could use to save your unbelieving husband or wife as verse 16 makes reference to? Now that they have departed you think you failed God and did something wrong? Basically what you are saying and what gets taught in many religious organizations, is that it is your duty to be the savior and make sure your significant other gets saved. I have heard the phrase spoken so often that “God hates divorce” even to the point that some make it seem like it is some unpardonable sin. The truth be known is that marriage is only temporary; in other words it is something that takes place here for our time on earth and does not carry over into the eternal realm. There is a divorce God does not look kindly on and that is when one divorces themselves from the truth of God and His plan of salvation, and falls for the lies of the devil and his cheap imitations. James 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (KJV) You ever hear the term high maintenance? That is what happens when you end up with someone more concerned with earthly things than the things of God. Spiritual prostitution, selling oneself out for a thrill in the flesh; something that can be a huge distraction to a believer who desires a relationship with God. My point, having dealt with a situation like this myself, is that maybe the departure is a blessing in disguise; so before you gather your prayer groups together and pray this person back into your life, watch what you ask for. Matthew 5:31-32 It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: (32) But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. (KJV) Many times these verses are looked at in the literal or physical context, and not the spiritual. As we just saw in the verses from James, many husbands and wives are cheating on the Lord with their spiritual adultery and have separated themselves from Him. Again, how can two walk together unless they be agreed? And if one or the other partner in a relationship is more concerned with the things of this dead fallen world, then the believer ends up carrying around dead weight. I can assure you that if the Lord says something is dead and needs to be discarded, and He then makes a way of escape, it would do one good to take heed before they end up dead also. Exodus 34:14-16 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God: (15) Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; (16) And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods. (KJV) God is a jealous God because He knows that His way and His plan for mankind is so much better than what we could ever ask or think. Just like with a parent raising a child, you envision a life for them of blessings, and how it breaks your heart to see them end up in a life of misery and despair because of bad choices and decisions. Also as a parent when you see your son or daughter has made a bad choice concerning a husband or wife, you reach out and try to stop them before they get to deeply involved in a destructive lifestyle. Ezra 10:10-12 And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the trespass of Israel. (11) Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers, and do his pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people of the land, and from the strange wives. (12) Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice, As thou hast said, so must we do. (KJV) The spiritual is greater than the physical, and as we see God has dealt with situations throughout the Bible where His people are in a bad place because they are unequally yoked with someone unhealthy to their walk, and He provided a way of escape for them. Your spiritual welfare is of more concern to our Lord than your temporal marital status here on earth, and should be yours also. 1 Corinthians 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. (KJV) I have seen times where a departure of an unbeliever is actually a way of escape being provided by the Lord and not some failure on your part as the devil would like many to think. That heartache and misery you have been experiencing, the confusion and doubt that has been dogging you and sucking the life out of you was doing more harm than good. While the Lord is throwing you a lifeline so that you don’t end up drowning in frustration and despair, the devil is throwing you the line to an anchor of a sinking vessel, guilting you into thinking you must go down with the ship. 1 Timothy 4:1-2 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; (2) Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; (KJV) Know this, that if an unbeliever departs, the person they departed from first was God. That person you have been married to may have once been a true believer, but like we see in the above verses has departed from the faith. Like with a bus schedule, they give you departure times as well as arrival times; in other words you can’t depart from something unless you were actually there at one time. Seducing spirits, doctrines of demons that appeal to the lower fallen nature of man, spiritual adultery, which ends up separating them from the love of God. My point today is, no you don’t take your marriage lightly or look for a way out because you want to find something better. The message God has for today is that the spiritual is so much greater than the physical realm, and if there is something or someone that is hindering your walk and needs to be let go of, then heed the way of escape and don’t be taken in by some phony guilt trip. I have seen some of these so called Christian men who treat their spouses like some robotic slave, demanding respect and obedience to them when they are nothing more than shallow flakes. If you are in a situation where you are married to someone who is more like a dictator than a loving Christian, and they are pulling you down rather than building up, be assured this is not something our Lord would want you to continue in, but will make a way of escape if you are willing. Don’t let anyone pack your bags and try to send you on some guilt trip, because when people try to make you think that by being separated or divorced is a failure, the truth be known, is that they are just telling you that they hold more to the physical than the spiritual. God is more concerned with your eternal marriage than your earthly one; so if He has made a way of escape, heed the warning and cancel the guilt trip. God bless and have a prosperous day in Christ Jesus our Lord. 2 Timothy 2:23-26 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. (24) And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, (25) In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; (26) And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. (KJV)
As Christians, those who should be imitators of Christ, we should be avoiding foolish and unlearned questions about our faith, especially from those that are not truly seeking a closer relationship with the Lord, but rather are trying to discredit the sacrifice the Son gave of Himself for the salvation of the world. Secondly, no one wins an argument; the fact that you engaged in the situation puts you in a no win outcome because you have lowered your standards to those of the world, and have entered a realm that God doesn’t operate in. Does God need you to defend Him? When I look through the Bible I see where He has handled things just fine; and when He decides to get His point across He is more than capable of doing it without mans’ help or approval. The only way someone is going to recover themselves out of the snare of the devil is when they make a choice to serve the God of love and not some self righteous loud mouth who thinks they will be heard for their much speaking. You want to fight and argue, go on one of the shows similar to what was the Jerry Springer show. You want to serve the Lord, then quit engaging in silly dead end debates which only breed more strife and contention. Matthew 6:5-7 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. (6) But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. (7) But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. (KJV) Why all these silly debates about prayer in schools or any other public venues? If that is not enough, then they pull out the soapbox and stand in front of other public institutions and whine and debate over the Ten Commandments or the lack of them. Pick your battles folks and use some wisdom. The Bible says we are to pray without ceasing, so until this body gives up the ghost I am free to do that no matter what anyone else thinks or says. So why do you need an audience or a public venue to pray in, when the Bible tells us just the opposite? Are your prayers going to be more effective if you can say them in a schoolyard or in front of a government building? I don’t think so. Many run around and demand their constitutional rights, and ignore the wisdom of God and His instruction on how to live in this world and to keep oneself unspotted from it. You want to pray in public? Then you have your reward. If you wish to receive the reward of inheritance then do what the word of God says and avoid this foolishness and nonsense. 2 Timothy 2:3-5 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. (4) No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. (5) And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully. (KJV) Again, if you wish to receive the eternal crown of life which the Lord will give to His people then it can only be achieved by doing it according to what the word of God says in agreement with the law of faith. There are differences in battles and different strategies that will allow you to be victorious, knowing the difference and rightly discerning what is of God and what isn’t can save you from an old fashioned behind the woodshed beating. 2 Chronicles 20:13-15 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. (14) Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; (15) And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. (KJV) The difference in battles is simple, when you go into a situation on your own or should I say engaging in debates because of your self righteous attitude, you then become subject to defeat, a realm that is not a part of our Lord. However, if you enter a situation that the Lord is leading then you already know you are victorious; and a perfect love will cast out all fear and doubt. Given the fact that the Lord is undefeated and no one has knocked Him off His throne or even come close, why would someone think He needs us to defend Him? Why would God need us to defend Him when not only is He forever settled in heaven, so is His word? Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. (KJV) Why do you put a physical face on a spiritual situation and end up like Paul wrote, shadow boxing, one that beats against the air? If you spent your time in the word of God and prayer you wouldn’t be wasting so much time in endless foolish debates, and striving over things that are not only of this world, but you have now lowered yourself to the standard of this realm and are fighting a losing battle on your own. Matthew 12:18-20 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. (19) He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. (20) A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. (KJV) Matthew 12 verse 19: [He shall not strive ...] He shall not shout as a warrior. He shall be meek, retiring, and peaceful. Streets were places of concourse. The meaning is, that he should not seek publicity and popularity. (from Barnes' Notes) The Lord Himself is this servant that is being referred to, and He set a perfect example for all to follow. Even though the people tried to make Him a king at one time, He knew His kingdom was not of this world but that He was sent here to deliver a message of salvation. The more you realize that our calling is to deliver a message of salvation in meekness and love, the less likely you will find yourself getting caught up in a bunch of senseless not so great debates. God bless and have a prosperous day in Christ Jesus our Lord. Mark 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. (KJV)
Mark 10:21 (from Adam Clarke Commentary) [One thing thou lackest] What was that? A heart disengaged from the world and a complete renunciation of it and its concerns, that he might become a proper and successful labourer in the Lord’s vineyard. Disengaged means to release; disentangle. Renunciation means the act of disowning, casting off, or giving up; abandonment, rejection. We are in this world but we are not to be of this world. Our new life in Christ consists of those things above, not those things here on this earth where moth and rust does corrupt. Our manner of life should be confessing that we are strangers and pilgrims just passing through; and not entangling ourselves in the affairs of this life. Through faith we look to new heavens and a new earth, not laying up our treasures here in this life, but laying up in store a good report before God, so that when we stand before His judgment seat our intercessor Christ Jesus will confess that we are one of theirs and we shall receive our crown of righteousness that is laid up for us. Now, think about it…really, what do we have to look forward to here on this earth? It is passing away and so will we if we do not hold fast our profession of faith and endure in truth unto the end. What will it profit you, if you gain the whole world, and lose your soul? What will you give today in exchange for your soul? Galatians 6:14-16 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. (KJV) How about, you and I commit our whole heart and life to Christ instead of the weak and beggarly elements of this world. How about, you and I lay down our life today, and raise up in a new life in Christ. How about, you and I not conform to the world, avoid profane and vain babblings, disengage and abandon evil communications which will corrupt our good manners in Christ, and allow ourselves to be separated from our mother’s womb, the fleshly things that tie us to this world. How about, instead, let us be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that you and I can prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God. Are you willing to disengage from and renounce the hidden things of darkness to be a servant of Christ? Well… 1 Peter 4 1:2 Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; (2) That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. (KJV) So finally, my beloved brethren, seeing then that all these earthly things shall be dissolved, having taken up your cross and chosen to follow Christ, remain as the few strangers and pilgrims just passing through on your way home, and disengage from and renounce those things that were gain to you in this world, and count them as loss that you may gain in Christ. And be diligent that you may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless this day. God bless and have a prosperous day in Christ Jesus our Lord. |
